Balboa

"Sure, there are few more melancholy sights in this world," said Tiz, "-- which is melancholy enough without addition! -- than that of an idealist who fancies himself a hard-headed man of the world: he has the hardships of both, and the comforts of neither." Balboa, who did not quite understand him, nodded gravely.

Balboa reaches the top of the isthmus, views the ocean unknown to the Europeans, and his aid says,

"Balboa, you get to give it a name!"

"Alright. I name it the Great Shining Ocean Under the Golden Shining Sun in the Name of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain."

"... um, that's a bit long. Can you shorten it?" the aid asks.

"Well, then the Great Shining Ocean Under the Golden Shining Sun in the Name of Queen Isabella." Grins proudly.

"Balboa, it's still... um, that just won't fit on the maps. Really, be specific," suggests the aide.

"Fine, it's the Specific Ocean."

:-) Hee! So *that's* how it got its name. I always wondered.
