I left what mos...Very nicely put, Dale, all of it.<br /><br />I left what most people would consider a dream adjunct gig eight years ago, a decade after I bid adieu to graduate school. I'm still struck by how the hierarchies and scarce opportunities in academia traumatize even relatively successful people. I've noticed that it's awfully hard for the people who leave not to judge themselves by the standards of that world even when they're right to leave it behind. I recently wrote a blog post eulogizing a great, quirky professor who helped me maintain a stable perspective early on; without him, I might never have accepted that I was meant to be a writer (and other things) rather than a scholar.
